As a Japanese person residing in Europe I recommed the western backpackers to stay at Hakuba Kazenoko as alternative one of the K's Inn when it's fully booked.
Try to contact 'em by phone 0261-72-6463. They offer you a well accomodation for JPY 5000 half board in western style.
I once stayed at the hostel for three weeks in summer 1998. It was a great experience to learn Japanese vacationers over there that were different ones from western standard, as local Japanese people have only one week vacation holidays a year. Many of the roommates were likely to take me for excursion by their own cars to northern coast of Honshu where good sushi dishes were available for incredible prices of JPY 2000 (Euro 12) that were worth more than Euro 30 in our place near Hamburg. I found the price of a glass of beer was too much expensive for our German standard due to the Japanese gov't policy collecting tax from liquors.
So, try once to overnight at the hostel especially if you a gaijin living in Japan.
Appreciate with lot of love from Hamburg, Germany. Mit freundlichen Gruessen.
